![]() Most of them do little more than preach to the choir to appease their tribe. ![]() My point is few writers succeed in swaying their readers to a specific political point of view. To those with no passion for verse, try Kirk’s gothic fiction – a genre of which he was a master. Suffice it to write, Kirk’s book on Eliot is nothing short of sustained brilliance on a poet, playwright, and critic who himself was among the most brilliant writer of any era. If I’d recommend one book to the Kirk uninitiated, it would be “The Age of Eliot.” Especially the latest edition that features an introduction by my good friend, Eliot scholar, and fly-fishing buddy Benjamin Lockerd. Eliot as a concluding chapter, you see, which was a welcome 20th-century addition to the original edition’s inclusion of Nathaniel Hawthorne. ![]() Not that Kirk didn’t revise his magnificent “The Conservative Mind” by adding T.S. ![]() Since I once again referenced Kirk, at this point I’d like to remind readers my favorite book by one of my favorite modern writers hasn’t much to do with politics. ![]()
